Periodontics

What is a periodontist?

According to the American Academy of Periodontology, a periodontist is, "a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease (a chronic inflammatory disease that affects the gums and bone supporting the teeth also known as gum disease), and in the placement of dental implants. Periodontists receive extensive training in both of these areas and more, including three additional years of education beyond dental school" (https://www.perio.org/for-patients/what-is-a-periodontist/).

What services do they provide?

Periodontist provide both surgical and non-surgical interventions regarding periodontal disease. A periodontist can also place dental implants. Many periodontist also specialize in cosmetic dentistry and can create full mouth rehabilitations.

Why can't my dentist just do this?

Sometimes your general dental team cannot provide the treatment you need and deserve. My experience, we will try and do our best at the general dentist, but there are times when you will need to see a specialist. They have more equipment, knowledge and skill to treat advanced periodontal disease. Many general dentists also prefer to refer out implants. If you need a dental implant, it's best to see a specialist that has the expertise.

Very helpful resource, they are the experts
