A pediatric dentist is a specialist that sees infants and children (generally through age 14). Once a child has reached age 14, they are (for insurance purposes) labeled an adult. This is because they should have all their permanent teeth by then and will require more adult-like cleanings (typically by a hygienist).
So why should your child see a pediatric dentist? A pediatric dentist has more education and training than a general dentist. They must complete post-doctoral programs to serve our most littlest patients. While you may choose to bring your children to your family practice (I see many little ones), sometimes a pediatric dentist is more equipped to handle them.

It is recommended that your child have their first dental visit by 12 months, or 6 months after the first tooth has erupted, which ever occurs first. You can expect your child to have regular dental visits every 6 months.
Yes, your children should be brushing and flossing their teeth daily. Between ages 3 and 5, a non-fluoridated toothpaste is recommended (toothpaste trainers) and a fluoride supplement (drops or chews) can by prescribed by your pediatrician or dentist. Once your child can control what they swallow, they can use a smear of regular fluoridated toothpaste and ditch the supplements. I know fluoride can be a controversial topic, so do what is right for you and your family. There are other natural therapeutics you can choose, talk to your dentist for options.
While it is true that your child will lose their teeth eventually, they are very important for their permanent teeth development and placement. Premature tooth loss can result in damage to developing teeth and create orthodontic issues. Not to mention, cavities can cause serious pain. I wouldn't my little ones running around with dental pain. Best to establish good hygiene habits early.
Absolutely! Kids need the same care as adults. In fact, primary teeth (baby teeth) have a very thin layer of enamel. Making our primary teeth more prone to dental decay and x-rays can detect cavities early. They also use radiographs to check for orthodontic issues, such as crowding, before teeth have even erupted.
There are many different kid products to choose from. My favorite, and my daughters favorite, is Burst. I love the options they have for kids. Bright colors, fun flavors (try the marshmallow) and fun interactive tips. We've tried several brands (including Sonicare and Oral-B) and she seems to like this one the best. This, of course, is just her opinion. Best feature: sensitive mode, for kids that can't tolerate the pulsating or vibrating toothbrushes.
My daughter, like most 8-year olds, is very picky. She really likes her new toothbrush and toothpaste. I like it because it's affordable, she will actually use it and I can have replacement heads/toothpaste shipped automatically.
There are several other brands that offer kids products. Other popular brands include Sonicare, Oral-B, Quip and Hum. Every child is different and their needs will be different. What's most important is to find a product that works best for your child.
